Abstract |
Various misidentification symptoms have been reported both in neurology and in psychiatry, including Capgras symptom and reduplicative paramnesia. These two symptoms were originally reported in different contexts. However, around 1980, their commonality was emphasized, and they were put together under a broad umbrella of "the delusion misidentification syndrome". As this concept was getting even broader, unfortunately, symptoms which cannot be regarded as "misidentifications" are included in this category. To understand the mechanism of a particular symptom of each patient, elucidating the conceptual structure of the symptom is essential. After that, possible cognitive mechanisms, clinico-anatomical correlations, and underlying neuropsychiatric diagnoses can be reasonably interpreted and discussed. |
