Abstract |
Dual neural circuit model of reading and writing has been proposed by the present author in order to explain the dissociated alexia and agraphia in kanji and kana in the Japanese language. PET scan activation studies on the reading aloud processes of kanji and kana words confirmed the validity of this model, showing that the left posterior inferior temporal area was activated in semantic reading process, while the left lateral occipital area was activated in phonological reading. No activation was seen in the left angular gyrus. As to the neural circuit responsible for writing letters activation study of the kana writing process using optic topography was done, and it revealed that the Broca area plays an important role in kana writing. |
