Abstract The skills such as riding a bicycle or using chopsticks are acquired with trial and error, and we would become to do them smoothly. Such skills can be called procedural memory.Snowden et al. (1989) reported that patients with semantic dementia could not use tools which have been well-acquired. There is a possibility that semantic memory would influence procedural memory. We investigated procedural memory in a patient with semantic dementia (patient MK). The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between semantic memory and procedural memory.
First, we examined tools use as well-acquired procedural memory, which have been acquired before onset. MK could only use the familiar tools which she has normally used (for example, chopsticks and a spoon). On the other hand, she could not use the unfamiliar tools which were not used frequently (for example, a hammer and a screwdriver). Secondary, three types of procedural memory task were executed so as to examine new skills acquisition and retention. She was able to acquire and retain any types of new skills. But her first performance time increased clearly in the retention test.
We thought that the patient with semantic dementia showed difficulty to retrieve the procedural memory that have not used recently. We concluded that semantic memory is important to retrieve the procedural memory smoothly, which has not used for a long time.
