Abstract |
Cerebral mechanisms of the involvement of perseveration in the process of the occurrence of paraphasia were studied. The subjects were 8 patients who exhibited a form of paraphasia in which perseveration was considered to play a major role on naming tasks. They were divided into the following 2 groups according to the characteristics of paraphasia: 4 patients in whom frameworks of sounds appeared as perseveration (Group A) and 4 patients who showed semantic perseveration (Group B). We speculated that paraphasia was caused by perseveration occurring in the process of sound formation of words related to the selection and arrangement of sounds in Group A, and by perseveration occurring in the semantic field or in the process of the selection of words from the semantic field in Group B. Since only a few patients had distinctly bordered lesions, caution is needed for generalization of the results. However, our findings suggest some relations between phonemic perseveration and lesions in the left temporal lobe and between semantic perseveration with lesions in the left basal ganglia. |
