Abstract |
The anatomical correlates, the clinical course of sensory extinction phenomenon, and the relation with unilateral spatial neglect or anosognosia for hemiplegia are controversial. I offered these theories in my previous report and other previous reports.
The extinction phenomenon caused by a right hemispheric lesion occurred more frequently than the extinction phenomenon caused by a left hemispheric lesion. Although subjects with deep-seated lesions tended to show extinction phenomenon more frequently than subjects with cortical lesions, extinction phenomenon caused by a deep-seated lesion often disappeared in a few weeks. Although the hemi-inattention theory is considered to be one of the mechanisms of extinction phenomenon, the perceptual impairment theory should also be considered. |
