Abstract |
Young children learn words amazingly fast and effectively, adding 6-10 new words in average between age two and six. I discuss how young children infer meanings of new words in spite of a logical problem that one cannot induce the intension of the meaning of a word from observation of a single instance. I then discuss insights and implications we gain from research in young children's lexical acquisition for our understanding of the nature of human mental lexicon. |
