Abstract Everyday communication and communication disorders in 22 people with aphasia were investigated by interviewing their spouses and asking the spouses to complete a questionnaire and by obtaining information from speech-language therapists. The ability of the patients to communicate in everyday life was measured using the Family Questionnaire (FQ) of the Japanese version of the Communicative Abilities in Daily Living scale developed by Watamori et al (1990). The following findings were obtained: 1) The FQ scores assessed by the speech-language therapists significantly agreed with those assessed by the spouses. 2) The Standard Language Test of Aphasia (SLTA) scores and score of whether the spouse adjusted the communicative environment accounted for the FQ scores. 3) The caregivers' burden scores of the spouses were correlated with the FQ scores, the SLTA scores, the patient's age and the patient's gait condition.
