Abstract It is hypothesized that syntactic parsing and semantic role interpretation are involved in the process of sentence comprehension (Saffran, 2001). However, it is not clear how these processes are executed in the brain. The task of sentence acceptability judgment was given to four brain-damaged subjects: two subjects with left frontal lesion (FLSs) and two subjects with left temporal lesion (TLSs). All subjects were impaired in understanding sentences. We examined how the patterns of sentence comprehension deficits were different in the two groups of subjects, using the task of sentence acceptability judgment controlled by two types of deviations (word vs. particle deviations) and two types of syntactic structures (simple vs. complex structures).
The major results included the following 1) FLSs showed difficulty in judging acceptability of sentences with particle deviations, while TLSs showed difficulty in judging acceptability of sentences with word deviations. 2) The difference in syntactically simple and complex sentences did not influence acceptability judgments in either group of these aphasic patients. Taken together, these results suggested that the left frontal lobe is involved in processing sentences with particle deviations, while the left temporal lobe is involved in processing sentences with word deviations, indicating that each processing is performed in different region of the brain.
