Abstract The purpose of this report was to examine the validity and the reliability on Japanese version of verbal fluency tasks.
We conducted letter fluency (L.F.) tasks (A/Ka/Shi for 60 seconds each) to 1,903 residents (mean age: 60.4±12.1, mean years of education: 10.9±2.6) and category fluency (C.F.) tasks (Occupation/Sport/Animal for 60 seconds each) to 1,047 residents (mean age: 59.1±13.4, mean years of education: 11.3±2.7). To evaluate internal consistency of L.F. and C.F. tasks, Cronbach's α coefficients were calculated and .818 was obtained on both fluency tasks. To examine test-retest reliability 310 subjects repeated the same L.F. tasks one year later. There was a significant correlation between the number of generated words on both trials (r=.77, p<.001). Similarly 68 healthy adults repeated the same C.F. tasks after one year and there was also a significant correlation between both performances (r=.875, p<.001).
To examine the validity of L.F. and C.F. tasks, correlation coefficients between performance of verbal fluency tasks and other tests which were regarded to reflect frontal lobe functions, such as digit cancellation tasks, stroop tasks and immediate recall of 25 word sentence. The results revealed a significant correlations between verbal fluency tasks and digit cancellation tasks, stroop tasks and sentence recall.
Japanese version of verbal fluency tasks maintain acceptable degree of reliability and validity as one measure of frontal lobe functions.
