| Abstract | Background: The Mayo Fluctuations Questionnaire (MFQ) is a structured informant interview to detect certain aspects of cognitive fluctuations that distinguish with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) from Alzheimer's disease (AD). We modified the MFQ by emphasizing the near-normal cognitive function in the lucid state and adding items for sleep disorders, and developed the Japanese revised version of MFQ (MFQ-JR). Objective: To assess the usefulness of the MFQ-JR for Japanese patients with DLB and AD. Methods: Participants included 43 AD patients and 11 DLB patients. MFQ-JR was administered to the reliable informants. The frequency of positive endorsement for each item was compared between the two patient groups. Results: The items that significantly differentiate AD from DLB include 4 items for cognitive fluctuation and 2 items for sleep disorders. Other 3 items for fluctuation and one item for sleep disorders had a trend to differentiate AD from DLB. The 8-point composite score of the 7 items for fluctuation and one item which showed significant difference in the previous study showed 82% sensitivity, and 70% of specificity in differentiating DLB from AD. Conclusion: The composite score of the 8 items of MFQ-JR may enable to detect the fluctuation of DLB that help to reliably distinguish DLB from AD. |
