Abstract |
Objectives: To estimate the annual rate of change on the score of the Mini-mental state examination (MMSE) in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) in a Japanese memory clinic, and to find possible factors affecting the rate of change. Methods: We studied 59 AD patients in the memory clinic of Niigata Rehabilitation Hospital. All the patients scored 10 or more on the initial MMSE and examined one year after. The mean age was 79.7±6.6 (SD) years, the mean MMSE score was 18.8±3.7 (SD). The mean annual rate of change on the MMSE score was -0.3±2.6 (-5.8∼4.9). Regression analyses examined the relation between the annual rate of MMSE change and factors including patients' attributes, disease attributes, neuropsychiatric symptoms, medical interventions and care services. Result: The mean±SD (range) of the annual rate of MMSE change was -0.3±2.6 (-5.8 to 4.9), Which means slower decline than the result of a recent meta-analysis (-2.6±3.5 as mean annual rate of change). Significant regression coefficients were obtained on the score of ADAS and on the initial examination and patients using short stay services on the examination one year after showed a significantly faster decline on the annual MMSE change. Conclusion: The slower rate of MMSE change in the current study may be attributed to the older age of patient or the systematic non-medical interventions for the patients, or both. |
